Hello again! First of all, let's get the stuff people want to
hear out of the way: new music is coming. I'm hoping to have
a single released on the prestigious Denizen Records, probably
my favourite east coast institution of new music. I've been
listening for a while and recently became acquainted with some
of the artists so they've sent me an address to send some demos
to that might get released. I originally wanted to do a longer
EP of stuff I've been working on but honestly I think it'd be
better if I keep with the singles for the time being. I don't
need an album to keep me company/burden me for this while. Why
is that? I've started therapy! It's always been something I've
wanted to do but I keep putting it off but I'm going to start
now. The long and short of it is that I got feeling for a guy
I know and after his rejection I realized that the way I see
other people is wrong, so I'm going in for that: I might be
a sociopath or something like that... I'm telling you all this
because the album is kinda cancelled, it didn't get very far
in the first place but I don't want it to hang over me any
further. Starting anew. Also there's a small compilation thing
happening that looks really cool, something to help a cat
hospital in Yorkshire, I'm going to look into it. I also
have Bitwig now (I've had it for a while but just haven't used
it substantially yet) so I'm going to start learning it: the
(hopefully) Denizen single will be my last Audacity project
for the time being. I had a gig today, it wasn't great but you
know the people liked it so I'm happy with it: I wanted to play
classical stuff but I realized I got the dates wrong and wouldn't
be able to take the bus to the venue so to get there by myself
I had to bring my acoustic guitar, which I was woefully unprepared
to play for that long alone. At least it was a museum gig so
it's not like I was the main attraction, nor that they were
expecting anything more than nice aural stimulation. This is a
good wake up call to get my resumes/repertoire back into order
since this was all kinda unorganized. I'm sort of a mess right
now if this wasn't all obvious. I'm just happy I'm making
progress some places. I have things to do, you know? I had a
talk today about cyberfeminism at the gig and since then I've
been wondering about it, I intend on reading Cyberfeminism Index
by Mindy Chu since I was told that was a good source on it,
but moreover it got me wondering about what to do for my
monthly piece (I am writing this on the sixth of June, intending
to be uploaded the next day). I think I'm finally hip with the
y2k revival, I just didn't expect it. A few days ago I finished
the first AA game again, I modded an old system I had to run it
and through that I also started gaining exposure to the larger
scope of modding: romhacks, homebrew, custom firmware, all that
shit, and I'm realizing now that nostalgia baiting in the consumer
sphere exists because the adults of today are the children of
twenty years ago, with their money and cars and free will to destroy
and rebuild the stuff of their youth. Kids are mutilating old
computers and dance tracks into these sparkling and metallic
new things, and it's really beautiful now that I see it what it's
for, but I still have my qualms. In romhacking I got ahold of some
music modules for my machine: a little sampling keyboard program,
a synth, a tracker copy, and those along with revisiting old games
(Ace Attorney, 999, Hotel Dusk, is it obvious to tell I have
a type for video games??), all of which had that heaviness of
the console's audio compression and inability to make any bass
signals, that which has become the aught's version of the vinyl
crackle or tape saturation. And then in tradition, the new kids are
adding new rhythms and proper bass to these sounds to both use
the original sound as a foundation while also being one of the
most obvious figureheads, the bread of the sandwich I guess. My
worry is that people are going too much into it with a view of
homage and not reconstruction. There is a lot of good innovation
going on, don't get me wrong: I think the new ear record, that
sueter37 album that's been blowing up, Mila Culpa, Worldpeace DMT
as well, they're really great. It's just that a lot of the y2k stuff
doesn't feel like it's trying to make anew by using this old tech,
moreso that they're just using them to make revivalist drek,
to sink and relive the past as adults. Then again I can't deride
hobbyists for making stuff they want to make, and I can't deny that
my own distaste for general nostalgia applies, but the future will
be decided by mutation. I know I'm not saying anything new, but I like
filling in time by writing, and you got to the end anyways, right?
